Chapter Seven

King Jarak went straight to Brant, clasping arms hand to forearm, placing his other hand on his shoulder. “Brant, I am very happy to see you,” he said, his eyes distraught. “I need your help.”

“And I yours.”

“What has happened?” Jarak asked, releasing his hand, obviously wondering why he was there.

“I have been targeted, just as you,” Brant began. “Men came to the farm while I was in town.” Brant’s eyes glistened in the gloom of the room as he thought about Tobias. “Tobias was killed, and they took Thea, as well as Jana and another girl from town.”

King Jarak shook his head and ground his teeth. “I am so sorry, Brant.” Jarak knew Tobias and liked him very much. But it was the knowledge that Tobias was Brant’s son, if not by blood, than by deed that made his heart ache for his friend. He knew how much the boy’s death would impact Brant, and it crushed his heart knowing the pain that Brant must have experienced when he found the boy’s body. But they could not linger on the dead; there were still the living to find. “I do not understand what is happening, but Cat was taken from me as well. Are the disappearances linked?”

Brant nodded his head. “They must be,” he said. Then he took a few moments to tell Jarak of the mysterious man who had poisoned them on the road, and his description got a reaction from Jarak.

“It was the same man who came to me,” Jarak added when Brant was done. “I could not move, and even now I feel the poison in my blood. What happened to us must be linked.”

“I believe there is little doubt. Jarak,” he added, pausing as if he didn’t want to tell him. “I saw Cat. She was on board a ship, leaving the dock just before you arrived. She was with Thea and the others.”

Jarak’s eyes shone with a mixture of worry and hope. “You saw her?”

“Yes.”

Jarak looked at Lord Morrellis, walking towards him with his hand outstretched. They shook hands as Lord Morrellis bowed his head. “Lord Morrellis, I’m sorry I could not send word of my arrival, but as you can see things have been most desperate.”

“I am here to serve, Your Grace.”

“Do you know anything about this ship?”

Lord Morrellis frowned. “I’m afraid I might. Please, your Highness, have a seat and I will have servants bring us food and drink and we can talk of a plan.” The king was just about to interrupt when Lord Morrellis continued, placing a placating hand on the distraught king. “King Dormath, I have men right now bringing the harbor master to me. We will get to the bottom of this, but let us do so with a sound plan.”

Baccus had entered with Jarak and was now standing just inside the door. Balfis had entered behind the king and awaited their orders. Jarak urged Baccus forward. “Lord Morrellis, this is Baccus, commander of the Dygon Guard. Have you met before?”

Lord Morrellis stepped before him and offered his hand.
